Melanie Spiller & Coloratura Consulting
A Tonic for Ramshackle Wordsmiths
Coloratura Consulting was created in 2001 in response to increasing demand for editing and project management of writing and editing projects. The website came about as the result of a blog written for Office Zealot between 2001 and 2007 about the craft of writing for technical writers, who may not have paid close attention in their composition classes and are now being asked to write.
A "coloratura" is a flavor of soprano singer who specializes in the highest range and is fond of runs, trills, and other florid decorations in vocal music. The proprietess of Coloratura Consulting, Melanie Spiller, is a coloratura, and if you're naughty, she'll sing very high into the telephone and spoil your day.
Although the primary focus of Coloratura Consulting is editing and teaching writing skills, some branching out into areas of interest has occurred, such as music, cooking and baking, and other forms of art.
The name for the company came from Paul Litwin, a friend and former client, who needed to put a company name down when getting Melanie a pass to a conference. It was in the email address, and he'd struggled to remember what it was long and hard enough for it to stick irrevocably in his head.

Melanie Spiller began working in publishing in 1992, although she'd been marking up books and writing documentation since she was
a child. She runs Coloratura Consulting from San Francisco, California, working as a substantive editor for technical journals, software
companies, testing facilities, poets, musicians, fiction writers, memoir writers, and other genre writers. Melanie enjoys working
with technology, music, or history best of all, but is smitten with the written word and will work with it in any form. She’s edited
over 200 books, several hundred white papers, countless help files, oodles of magazine articles, and quite a few works of fiction,
non-fiction, and exploratory non-fiction.
Melanie has also been making music since there was only one digit in her age, playing
instruments, singing, dancing, teaching, and attending performances. Her speciality is Medieval music, but she also enjoys making
Baroque, chant-based modern, or world music, and African drumming. She's dabbled in styles as essoteric as TaKeTiNa (see www.VillageHeartbeat.com
for more about this) and as mundane as a regular church gig in a Lutheran church.
