“Honey, don’t forget your umbrella,” Albert’s wife called to him. “It’s not going to rain,” he called back as he wrestled with his shoes, annoyed that he was getting so stiff that even his feet seemed impossibly distant. “It is,” she asserted. “I’ve been watching the forecast.” “What, that idiot?” he scoffed. “He would know if it was dark at midnight.” “I started watching this new fellow, Rudolf, on the other channel.” “Isn’t that the other guy’s name?” He’d gotten both shoes on and was hunching into his jacket. “Yah, they’re both named Rudolf,” she said. “One has a big mustached and red cheeks and the other has a big head. I’ve been calling them the Egg and the Red to my friends. They’re the ones who told me about the Red in the first place. I think he’s more reliable.” “Aw, you can look out the window and see that it’s not going to rain,” he said. He was irritable about every little thing these days. Why must she always nag so? “Just take your umbrella, dear. What will it hurt?” “It’s just one more thing to leave on the train. The man’s an idiot. Just like the other.” “You should bring it. Rudolf the Red knows rain, dear.”
